At least 11 people are dead after a gunman opened fire at a Pittsburgh synagogue while shouting anti-Semitic slurs

  • At least four people were confirmed dead Saturday morning after a gunman opened fire at a Pittsburgh synagogue.
  • Pittsburgh police spokesman Chris Togneri told reporters there were "multiple casualties" inside the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in addition to 3 police officers who were shot.
  • Officials confirmed a suspect was in custody.

A gunman opened fire on Saturday morning prayer services at a Pittsburgh synagogue, reportedly killing at least four people and injuring several others. 

Pittsburgh police spokesman Chris Togneri told reporters there were "multiple casualties" inside the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in addition to 3 police officers who were shot before a suspect was taken into custody just before noon.

Local media reported officials expect more victims as they continue to clear the scene. 

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said all residents of the neighborhood are required to stay inside their homes until further notice.

Police responded to the active shooter in Pittsbugh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood, reportedly fielding calls from people barricaded inside the building before they were forced to use their cars as shields as they confronted the gunman.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were also reportedly responding to the scene.

Pittsbugh Public Safety officials confirmed the situation in a 9:34 AM tweet and urged residents to avoid the area. 

The synagogue holds a 9:45 AM Shabbat service, according to its website. Police told local outlets they received

President Donald Trump tweeted that he was watching the events unfold. 

Pittsburgh Magazine described Squirrel Hill as "the unequivocal center of Pittsburgh’s Jewish population" that has been home to Jewish families and communities for nearly a century.
