Sheboygan County Veteran Service Department adds new veteran service officer

The Sheboygan County Veterans Service Department, formerly located in the Sheboygan County Courthouse Annex in Sheboygan, has relocated to the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 650 Forest Ave. in Sheboygan Falls.

“Both the Veterans Service Office and ADRC provide valuable assistance and support to veterans and their families," Health and Human Services committee vice chairman Roger Otten said. "Being co-located will provide for greater collaboration and a central location for the clients that we serve."

This move comes at the same time as another big change for the department. Todd Richter, who has served as assistant veteran service officer for the past four years, has been appointed by County Administrator Adam Payne to serve as veteran service officer.

“Todd is very passionate about helping fellow veterans and I look forward to continuing to work with him in his new position," said American Legion Post Commander Allen Nohl.

Veterans and their families needing assistance from the County Veterans Service Office are encouraged to call 920-459-3053 to schedule an appointment.

Family Resource Center welcomes new executive director

The board of directors of the Family Resource Center of Sheboygan County announced that George Palmer has been appointed executive director.

Palmer previously served on the board and as a Literacy Council volunteer tutor where he taught a U.S. citizenship class. He was asked to fill in as acting director last year and has recently chosen to move from the acting to permanent executive director position.

Palmer brings a wealth of business expertise to the position, having recently retired from 22 years at Plymouth Foam where he was vice president of product development.

“To meet the growing needs of Sheboygan County, we will be exploring new ways to generate revenue and new ways to bring our unique talents and services to the people we serve," Palmer said.

Palmer oversees the two programs at the FRC: Parents as Teachers and the Literacy Council. Parents as Teachers is a federally-approved home visitation program for parents with a child age birth to 6. A trained, PAT-certified parent educator consults with a family once or twice a month to provide child development information, age-appropriate parenting skills, regular screenings to identify potential developmental delays and more.

The Literacy Council helps adults learn to read, write and speak English better. Students are matched with a trained volunteer who meets with them once a week for an hour or two to work on literacy skills. Both programs offer their services to all Sheboygan County residents free of charge.

Established in 1997, the FRC office is located in the Generations building in Plymouth. To learn more, visit www.frc-sc.org.
