How Do I Tell My Boss To Mind Her Own Business?

She asks questions like "So, do you think you and Jason will get an apartment together soon?" and "You're using birth control, right?"

These questions are none of her business. So far I've tried to change the subject but Karen isn't good about picking up on social cues.

The last thing I want is for Karen to be in my business. I don't want her to think that she can just ask me anything about my life she's curious about.

She does the same thing to a few of my co-workers but she does it to me the most, maybe because I'm the youngest person in the company.

It's gross how Karen pries into my life outside of work. I can't stand it!

What should I do?

Thanks,

Alyssa

Dear Liz,

I started a new job in May. The job is great. I only have one problem, but it's a big problem and it's driving me crazy.

I work for a marketing agency. We're growing fast and I love that energy. My problem is my boss, "Karen." She is 35. I'm twenty-six.

Karen acts like my mom. She tells me when she likes an outfit I wear to work, and she tells me when she doesn't.

I don't want her opinion.

I know how to dress for work! I never dress inappropriately. Karen has no fashion sense at all. It's one of the reasons I meet with clients instead of her.

One day she said "I'm not sure I would wear flats with that skirt." I just smiled.

Karen is my supervisor but she isn't the owner of the agency. That's "Mike." Mike tells me at least once a week how glad he is that he hired me.

I already got a raise so I know Mike is happy with my work.

Karen doesn't understand boundaries. She asks me intrusive questions about my personal life. One of my co-workers mentioned my boyfriend's name one time, and now Karen always asks me about my relationship.

Thanks,

Alyssa
