Festival Foods gives boost to local nonprofits
Festival Foods, with a location at 2151 S. 42nd St. in Manitowoc, is supporting local nonprofits by making it easy for customers to donate at checkout.
According to the Wisconsin grocer, in 2018, these giving opportunities, which it calls "icon" campaigns, raised more than $291,822 for nonprofit community organizations throughout the state.
Each year, nonprofit organizations can apply through the Festival Foods website to hold a 15-day icon campaign. After all submissions are in, associates at each Festival Foods location vote on the nonprofits they want to support, with the exception of The Salvation Army and Muscular Dystrophy Association, which will have icon sales at every Festival Foods location this year.
In the Manitowoc and Sheboygan region, icon campaigns will also be held for Make-A-Wish Foundation, Manitowoc County Domestic Violence Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the USO (United Service Organization).

Aurora Health Care manager earns Patriot Award for support of Army Reserve team member
Mary Beth Larsen, the emergency services manager at Aurora Medical Center in Manitowoc County, was presented with the Patriot Award on behalf of the Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR).
The ESGR is a program of the U.S. Department of Defense. Its Patriot Award honors a supervisor of a member of the Guard or Reserve. Nominations for the award are submitted by the service member or the spouse of a service member.
Hospital President Cathie Kocourek also signed the ESGR’s Statement of Support. The statement is part of the ESGR’s effort to increase employer support of National Guard and Reserve unit members in their civilian positions. A framed version of the Statement of Support was also presented to the hospital during a ceremony at the hospital on Jan. 9.
Larsen was nominated by Jenise S. Jorsch, a major in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. In her nomination letter, Jorsch outlined Larsen’s support of her military service through several positions, while managing her absence from her position as a nurse in the Aurora Medical Center Emergency Department.
In nominating Larsen, Jorsch wrote that “Mary Beth is a caring and compassionate leader who, by supporting the ever-changing and often demanding schedule of a traditional soldier in the Army National Guard, significantly impacted the readiness of the fighting force.”
Larsen was presented the award in a ceremony Jan. 9 at the Aurora Medical Center in Manitowoc County.
“Mary Beth is a wonderful manager and the efforts she made to support Jenise’s military work is an example of that,” Kocourek said. “Our goal is to be supportive of all aspects of our team members’ lives, not just their work in the hospital. Supporting the efforts of Guard and Reserve unit members is a benefit to the community and the nation, not just to that team member.”
The Statement of Support says, in part, that the employer will “continually recognize and support our country’s service members and their families, in peace, in crises and in war.”
According to the ESGR, “supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s guard and reserve units.”
The framed Statement of Support has been placed in a public place in the hospital.
