Consumer prices slipped 0.1 percent last month, pulled down by sharply lower gas prices and cheaper air fares, used cars, and mobile phone plans. The Labor Department said the consumer price index rose just 1.9 percent in December from a year earlier, the first time it has fallen below 2 percent since August 2017.
Toyota is recalling 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. to replace potentially deadly Takata front passenger air bag inflators. The move is part of the largest series of automotive recalls in U.S. history. The recall includes multiple Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles from the 2010 through 2017 model years.
North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) is wrapping up a record-breaking year. The state agency, known primarily for the affordable financing it offers through its FirstHome™ program, set a production record in 2018 by purchasing 1,798 loans with a total value of more than $300 million. NDHFA’s loan production was 134 percent higher in 2018 than the previous year. The agency’s staff attributes some of the increased demand to the interest rates it was able to offer this past year.
TransCanada Corp., the company behind the contentious Keystone XL oil pipeline, is changing its name to TC Energy. If approved by shareholders and regulators, TransCanada becomes TC Energy in the second quarter. The project has been marred by protests. Environmentalists and Native American groups had sued to stop the pipeline. A hearing on the proposed pipeline is scheduled for Monday in Great Falls, Montana.
Macy's is leading retailers lower after posting lackluster holiday sales numbers. Macy's shares have been down more than 18 percent. With low unemployment, rising wages and consumer confidence high, there had been optimism about holiday sales receipts. But investors were disappointed as Macy's cut its full-year earnings and sales forecasts Thursday, and Kohl's said holiday sales fell sharply from the previous year.

Nutrition labels are coming to the beer aisle. Starting next month, packages of Bud Light will have prominent labels showing the beer's ingredients, calories and the amount of fat, carbohydrates and protein in a serving. The labels aren't legally required, but major beer makers have agreed to disclose ingredients and nutrition facts on their products by 2020.
