Business Of Boo

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - From a Zombie Walk to ZooBoo, there are plenty of Halloween-themed events this weekend.

During this online shopping age, it's also a chance for businesses to draw people into their stores through events.

Down a gravel road just east of Sioux Falls, a bald eagle is perched, but this bird of prey may have been scared off by what he saw.

"We have a zombie apocalypse, and then we have the graveyard," Twisted Nightmare Organizer Tommy Schmitz said.

Welcome to Twisted Nightmare, a haunted house that can cause quite a scare even during the daylight.

"All of the fears and phobias that I can think of we try to get in there somewhere," Schmitz said.

Schmitz is one of the house's organizers. He's been a police officer for more than 20 years. Because of that, the money raised from this event goes to the local Fraternal Order of Police.

"We're getting people from Minnesota and Iowa who are coming through, so there's definitely a need for it," Schmitz said.

If you're not so much into the fear factor, you'll find a very different, family friendly event at Lake Lorraine in Sioux Falls.

"We are offering trick or treating around the lake. We have more than 20 businesses participating," Lake Lorraine Community Director Amy Smolik said.

In addition to trick or treating, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can decorate pumpkins and take pictures with characters or in Halloween Photo Booths. All of it is free.

"Really bring the community out to this development. For people who don't live on the west side, they might not know all of the exciting changes," Smolik said.

Events like this can spook up customers and be a lot of fun.

"It's great to hear everybody scream and laugh and run to the parking lot when we're done. Chalk it up to success," Schmitz said.

Success in a scary form.
