Merrick Medical Center partnerships gain national attention

CENTRAL CITY — To address an above-average obesity rate in the local community, Merrick Medical Center has partnered with local schools, businesses and organizations to change the way residents engage in health and fitness activities.

Now, that partnership model is being presented as a best practice case study to inspire other hospital leaders in rural communities across the U.S. The collaboration between the hospital and local community organizations is featured in the 2017 Compendium of Best Practices in Rural Health Hospital-Community Partnerships, a publication of Bryan Health. It is one of 12 case studies that illustrate what is possible when hospitals and community organizations share resources, skills and services for a greater impact on population health.

What began as a social media campaign encouraging people to share photos of healthy activities became a vision to influence the overall health of the community. The hospital has formed multiple community-based partnerships to develop new programs focused on wellness, including fitness and nutrition programs at area schools, senior living communities and along the local walking trail, as well as occupational wellness programs for employees at local businesses.

Participation in these programs regularly exceeds expectations.

“Merrick Medical Center and its partners have created programs that combine health care and life care so that healthy living is easier to achieve for everyone in our community,” said Julie Murray, president and chief executive officer at Merrick Medical Center.

Bosselman Enterprises entities raise funds for charities

Bosselman Enterprises has made two large donations through retail site fundraisers this fall.

Pump & Pantry stores across Nebraska helped Nebraskaland Distributors raise funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital through customer donations in October. The total donation to St. Jude’s was $21,992.68. A check will be presented to national St. Jude’s representatives at 2 p.m. Dec. 19 in the Bosselman Enterprises lobby in Grand Island.

Also, Boss Shops across the United States celebrated “No Shave November” by having staff members grow beards and asking customers to “round up” their total or make a donation to the American Cancer Society that month. Both staff and customers donated to the cause, and the Bosselman family matched what was raised, bringing the total donation to $6,419.14.

“Our company is very pleased to demonstrate our commitment to giving back, by helping to raise money for these two deserving charities,” said CEO Charlie Bosselman. “Cancer is a cause that is near and dear to our hearts, after losing my dad, Chuck Bosselman, to cancer several years ago. We have been participating in No Shave November for several years now. St. Jude’s is a charity we and our giving customers have supported every year for quite some time, and we are happy to continue that tradition through our relationship with Nebraskaland Distributors.”
