Business offers alternative methods of healing

Modern living can be very stressful. Stress can impact your physical and mental being.

There are many methods for dealing with stress, including ones considered alternative methods. They draw from the wisdom and practices of people who came before us.

One of those methods is Reiki, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It also promotes healing.

Sarah Larsen Astrones of Grand Island is a certified Usui Reiki master. She recently started a Reiki practice, Better Living by Sarah, in Grand Island. Along with being a Reiki master, she is also a life coach.

Dr. Mikao Usui was born August 1865 in Japan. He was the founder of the Usui System of Reiki. Usui’s main teachings focused on how to heal oneself. His belief was that to be able to heal others, you first need to have healed yourself.

Usui System of Natural Healing is a Japanese healing art. The Japanese word “Reiki” is translated as “universal life energy.” The Usui System is a way of working with Reiki for the healing of self and others.

Larsen Astrones is also a licensed independent mental health practitioner and a licensed independent professional counselor in private practice. Her office is in the Great Western Centre at 1811 W. Second St., Suite 330.

People often ask her what Reiki is.

“Reiki utilizes universal life force energy to help balance and heal people, whether it’s for physical, emotional, mental or spiritual reasons,” Larsen Astrones said.

She does hands-off sessions and spot treatment. She offers a medical grade biomat that is used to reduce depression, anxiety, insomnia, arthritis pain, gastrointestinal issues and more.

“I also use Tibetan singing bowls, crystals, essential oils and tuning forks, which makes the experience ‘spa-like’,” Larsen Astrones said.

Since becoming a Reiki master last summer, she has treated more than 100 people.

“I wanted to use a method where I could help more people than I can with counseling,” Larsen Astrones said about becoming a Reiki master.

“With Reiki, I can, as it allows me to treat family, friends, kids and teens, animals, homes, plants and anyone whom Reiki finds,” she said. “My Reiki/coaching operates separately from my counseling practice, but is located in the same suite. It is just a separate office space within that suite, and is a separate business.”

Her Reiki service also offers many resources for sale. They include crystals, sage for smudging, sage spray, Young Living Essential Oils and much more.

“Basically, Reiki is a great alternative to massage for people that don’t like to be touched, but still seek that tranquil/relaxing feeling and relief that massage offers,” Larsen Astrones said. “Or, for people that seek the benefits from a sauna but don’t want to get naked and sit next to naked strangers.”

She said her reason for becoming a Reiki Master was to help people.

“I just want to help people and introduce them to this wonderfully euphoric and healing experience,” she said.

Larsen Astrones is a Grand Island native and graduated from Northwest High School in 2002. She received a master’s degree in counseling from Doane University and started her practice in 2013.

“I wanted to open up a mental health practice here in Grand Island,” she said.

Her clients come from throughout rural Nebraska and surrounding states. She started her practice in Grand Island as rural Nebraska is underserved by mental health counselors.

Larsen Astrones is also a Dialectical Behavior Therapy therapist. DBT is a cognitive behavioral treatment that emphasizes individual psychotherapy and group skills training. It helps people learn and use new skills and strategies.

“It is ways to use coping mechanisms and skills to better regulate our emotions to deal with whatever is going on in our lives in the here and now,” she said.

Larsen Astrones said there is a “very distinct parallel” between her counseling and Reiki practice.

“I’m really into holistic healing on all different levels,” she said.

Holistic healing is treating the body as a whole. She said people can feel many physical symptoms at one time. But sometimes those symptoms are interconnected.

“I was interested in Reiki before I graduated with my master’s degree,” Larsen Astrones said. “I was pulled to it because it was something that wasn’t yet widely known and utilized, especially in this area. I also liked it because you are balancing the body’s energies. In doing so, you are helping a person balance themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually.”

She said many people nowadays are so involved in their lives that they put taking care of themselves on the “back burner.”

“It is about self-care,” Larsen Astrones said. “It is no different from people who come to me for counseling. They want to change something within themselves. Everybody wants to feel better.”
