Study: Fiber ring would boost suburban crime efforts grow business

The Miami Valley Communications Council is laying out plans for a fiber optics ring to link several communities, sharing services involving crime and 911 systems.

The system would also provide access to area businesses and infrastructure to attract future businesses, documents show.

A study by the council – which includes Centerville, Kettering, Miamisburg, Moraine, Oakwood, Springboro and Washington Twp. – indicates several benefits, according to member records.

-Connecting cities to each other in ways that allow for joint projects involving crime mapping and shared 911 systems without paying for third-party data circuits.

-Reducing long-term dependence to Internet service providers by building its own network.

-Laying infrastructure that will bring new telecommunication vendors to the area;

-Providing access to the network to area non-profits and businesses.

The MVCC study was paid for by a $100,000 grant applied for in 2013, records show.
