Closures: The past few months have seen several notable short-term and permanent closures of local businesses, including Saddles Restaurant (will reopen as Layla in the spring), Sonoma Cheese Factory (temporary), Kane Menswear (permanent), Sonoma Speakeasy (temporary), Umbria and Aventine restaurants (permanent), and more.

Wine growth: At the recent Wine Industry Financial Symposium, Rabobank analysts reported that 3,540 wineries operated in California in 2011, and within five years the number of wineries in the state had increased 31 percent, to 4,653.

Coffee service: Top That Yogurt at 531 Broadway has a new espresso bar and is offering coffee service throughout the day.

TSA precheck: Travelers seeking expedited security lines and less hassle at all U.S. airports are encouraged to enroll in the TSA Precheck. Local travelers can sign up for the Precheck closer to home at the Charles M. Schulz Airport (as opposed to SFO or Oakland) in Santa Rosa from Jan. 7 to 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. 2290 Airport Blvd. Look for the Blue RV mobile unit in the short term parking lot. Schedule appointment and pre-enroll prior to event at universalenroll.dhs.gov.

Restaurant promotion: The ninth annual California Restaurant Month “celebrates the restaurants, chefs and culinary creations that have cemented the state as a world-class foodie destination.” In January, a handful of Sonoma Valley restaurants will offer special menus and Sonoma Valley Delicious will offer culinary events throughout wine country with restaurants, wineries, farmers, cheese-makers, brewers, distillers and food artisans. Suite D, Ramekins and Epicurean Connection are participating. A complete list will be online at sonomavalley.com/delicious.

Promotion: Current Don Sebastiani & Sons CFO, Omar Percich, has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer of Don Sebastiani & Sons. He is taking over the position from current COO, Tom Hawkins, who is retiring at the end of the year. Hawkins has been with Don Sebastiani & Sons for the past 10 years.

New board members: Teen Services Sonoma (TSS) has elected two new board members. Marney Malik joins the board as treasurer, and Sydney Randazzo will serve as chair of communications.

Water Board opening: Dan Muelrath, the general manager of the Valley of the Moon Water District, stepped down in mid-December to pursue an opportunity with the Diablo Water District in Contra Costa County. As a result, the position is now open at VOMWD, and recruitment for a replacement is ongoing. Matt Fullner, the water systems manager at VOMWD, will serve as interim manager.
