Apellis receives orphan drug designation for APL-2
Apellis Pharmaceuticals Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of therapeutic compounds to treat diseases through inhibition of the complement system, recently that its C3 complement inhibitor, APL-2, has been granted orphan drug designation by the FDA for the treatment of C3 glomerulopathy (C3G). C3 glomerulopathy refers to a group of rare renal disorders in which hyperactivity of the complement system leads to deposition of C3 in the glomeruli, the portion of the kidney responsible for blood filtration. C3G is a disease with a high unmet need, as approximately half of all patients with C3G progress to end-stage renal disease within 10 years of diagnosis, and there is no approved therapy proven to prevent progression. By targeting C3, the point of convergence of all three complement pathways (classical, lectin and alternative), Apellis believes APL-2 has the potential to eliminate the excessive and inappropriate C3 activation that is central to C3G, thereby avoiding glomerular C3 deposition and progression of renal disease. Apellis is currently conducting a Phase 2 trial of APL-2 in four types of glomerular diseases in which complement has been implicated: C3 glomerulopathy, IgA nephropathy, primary membranous nephropathy and lupus nephritis. Based in Kentucky, the company has an office in Waltham.
Maynard's AquaBounty announces bioengineering rules
AquaBounty Technologies Inc., a Maynard-based biotechnology company focused on enhancing productivity in the aquaculture market and a majority-owned subsidiary of Intrexon Corp., recently announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has released its disclosure standards for the labeling of products containing bioengineered components. The release of these rules was mandated by the 2016 Amendment to the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 and is an important step forward in addressing the issues associated with the presence of bioengineered food ingredients in the food supply in the United States. The safety of these materials is assured by other regulatory processes, but the Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard provides a national marketing standard to communicate the presence of these materials to consumers.
Registry of Deeds' social media promoted
Register of Deeds William P. O’Donnell recently reiterated the importance he places on the registry’s use of social media platforms to communicate directly with the citizens of Norfolk County. O’Donnell said, “At the Registry of Deeds, we put a high value on making important information readily available on a 24/7 basis. After all, just because our doors close at the end of the business day doesn’t mean the registry has to stop working for you. For example, our website www.norfolkdeeds.org lets people review scanned images of over 8.5 million land documents dating back to 1793, as well as to learn about our latest consumer protection programs. I also want people to note that registry information is available not just from using their workstations or laptops, but also from their smartphones or tablets.” The register also noted that you can print out an application of the popular Homestead Act. A Homestead provides a homeowner with limited protection against the forced sale of their primary residence to satisfy unsecured debt up to $500,000. Norfolk County residents can also sign-up on-line for its free Consumer Notification Service. This program will alert a person anytime a land document has been recorded against their name in Norfolk County. Additionally, there is valuable county real estate information that can be researched and tracked based on the monthly and quarterly real estate statistical reports, such as the number of residential and commercial properties sold and average prices of property sold.
