In an era where athletes in professional sports are learning from business executives, future business executives can now learn from professional sports.

Through a newly launched partnership with the New York Jets, students of the New Jersey based, Centenary University now have the unique opportunity to learn and experience the business operations of an NFL franchise.

This multi-faceted educational program allows a portion of the school's 2,300 students to take part in curriculum, which includes a Jets-themed course for spring 2019- taught by Centenary professionals in collaboration with Jets staff, and internship opportunities.

"The New York Jets partnership with Centenary University offers a unique opportunity for young students to enhance their education by exposing them to a hands-on, fast-paced environment," said New York Jets President Neil Glat. "Through the partnership, Centenary professors and Jets executives will strive to provide students with the knowledge and, importantly, the experience needed to be successful in the business of sports."

The Jets were one of the first of a handful of NFL teams to partner with local academic institutions to create programs for students- a savvy business move for any industry leader to consider.  Here's why.

It makes academic sense.

In the last decade, the number of academic offerings related to sports has grown rapidly. Almost 500 colleges and universities offer sports management programs, according to the North American Society of Sports Management.

Some of the top programs are either in or within a quick drive of New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, L.A. or San Francisco- giving schools have easy access to 48 franchises in one of the five major sports leagues. Those cities also are hubs for leagues, agencies, sports finance groups and large corporations that sponsor sports.  That means not only a steady stream of qualified guest speakers, but lots of opportunities for work experience beyond the typical internship- a taste of what students at Centenary University can now look forward to.

"This partnership with the New York Jets creates innovative academic and internship opportunities for Centenary students, who will gain important workplace experience within a world-class sports organization," said David P. Haney, President of Centenary University.

It also makes business sense.

Having direct access to a local student population who is already well versed in their business creates a pipeline of talent for the NY Jets primed for their industry. This is particularly important to help organizations attract their next generations of fans who come equipped with expertise in media their generation consume.

"Students are coming into their first job already experienced in using professional social media services that are used in major corporations in an effort to drive their own social engagement, said Jeremy Collins - Co-Founder of the social media company, Follower Packages. We see students purchase services to help scale things like Instagram followers and overall social media support to promote everything from college football to frat parties and even awareness for causes they are passionate about. 33% of our clientele is now college based.

The planned Jets course is already capitalizing on this trend by exploring the topic of social media strategies, as well as data and analytics, communication, business, and sales.

But most importantly, it makes social sense.

Combining an industry students are passionate about with business curriculum to help them succeed, can potentially help to improve college drop out rates- where currently, the U.S. ranks the highest, as only 54.8 percent of students graduate in six years.

Additionally, sports continue to occupy a prominent place in our society and both reflect, and often lead, people in working out important cultural issues. Partnerships between sports franchises and students can help to create opportunities to amplify this generation who represent a strong voice for social change.
