I am terribly sorry. I know have been absent. Things started to really ramp up with my business and as a solopreneur managing all aspects of my startup (planning, production, shipping, investor relations, etc), I have not had an inch of time to write. Is that a basic concept? Entrepreneurs not having enough time? I would imagine so.
There were so many things swirling through my head that I was considering to write about for this article, but for some reason, this concept seemed the most interesting.
Have you heard of the concept of a basic b*tch? It’s usually used in a derogatory fashion, meaning someone, who isn’t special, doesn’t have access to exclusive things and is generally commonplace in who they are and everything they do.
I used to loathe that term and everything associated with it. I worked really hard to separate myself and my fashion brand from being basic, considering myself as anything but. I also really avoided associating with basic people more than I had to out of fear that their utter basicness would rub off on me.
The top definition of a basic b*tch on Urban Dictionary reads as: Someone who is unflinchingly upholding of the status quo and stereotypes of their gender without even realizing it. She engages in typical, unoriginal behaviors, modes of dress, speech, and likes. She is tragically/laughably unaware of her utter lack of specialness and intrigue. She believes herself to be unique, fly, amazing, and a complete catch, when really she is boring, painfully normal, and par. She believes her experiences to be crazy, wild, and different or somehow more special than everything that everybody else is doing when really, almost everyone is doing or has done the exact same thing. She is typical and a dime a dozen.
Yes, males can also be basic- he is called a 'Basic Bro'.
In scoping out my market and competition, I realized that all very successful fashion brands (I’m talking $1B in revenue and above) have a strong level of basicness to them. Why? Because basic things are relatable to the largest amount of people. Basic sells.
That’s why the terminology “back to basics” is considered to be a good thing. That’s why the categories of basic t-shirts and jeans are two of the easiest selling items in fashion. It’s why the most basic images on social media get the most likes. It’s the reason why someone who just created a patent for invented something new gets 3 likes, while a person sipping their morning cup of coffee on their front porch gets 3K likes.
Let’s look at the most liked images-to-date on Instagram. Sure they are all by uber famous individuals which in itself is the opposite of ‘basic’, but being a household name also has some basicness in the fact that everyone knows who they are. The three most liked images on Instagram at the time of this article are:
- Kylie Jenner: Baby announcement- 17.9M likes. Having a baby- while extraordinary and life-changing for Jenner, in the grand scheme of things, a pretty basic element of life. How many of us were babies and/ or had babies? Everyone? Ok... basic.
- Kylie Jenner: Holding her & Travis Scott’s baby Stormi- 13M likes. A baby, again while mysterious and magical in that people are able to create new people, also kind of basic because we were all babies at one time.
- Justin Bieber: Engagement announcement to Hailey Baldwin- 12.8M likes. While it’s two young celebrities, extraordinarily talented and beautiful, one who recently seems to have turned his life around, however again, marriage and engagement- pretty basic.
Other most liked Instagram images include celebrity birthdays, marriages and baby announcements.
Okay… But what about 16-year-old Ayrton Little, the African American teen who got accepted to Harvard? What about the Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr, heralded for her beauty in her day but who also invented the patent of frequency jumping which today is the basis for Wifi, Bluetooth, and military spy/stealth operations with an estimated $30B market value? What about Dr. Masaru Emoto’s snowflake and water experiment proving words are alive and have power, manifestation powers and vibration? What about so many people in the world acheiving groundbreaking and remarkable things outside of having birthdays, babies, or getting married? Where are their 17M likes?
So it seems, basic is easily understood while fewer people can align with or understand extraordinary. But, I now understand that there is an element of extraordinary in the basic. That fact that so many other people understand it, actually makes it extraordinary. The fact that these are the most liked images on the Instagram platform is extraordinary.
So how does this tie into my business and entrepreneurship? While I used to abhor anything basic, striving for my brand to be considered extraordinary, I now value an element of basicness intertwined in my design aesthetic and business model. I now understand that being basic is special in that it allows us to connect with so many other individuals. But the key is balance. Don't allow too much basicness in, or your business will have a hard time standing out from the competition.
