A fifth boy has been saved from the Thai caves on the second day of the rescue

Rescue divers have headed back inside a flooded cave complex in Thailand to rescue more members of the stranded soccer team — and appear to have made their first rescue of the day.

One boy has already been rescued on Monday, Sky News reported a Royal Thai Navy official as saying, bringing the total number of boys that have been rescued up to five.

Reportersat the scene said a sixth boy had been extracted, but officials have yet to confirm it.

Ten rescuers put on scuba gear and headed into the Tham Luang cave network around 11 a.m. local time on Monday to extract the remaining members of the junior soccer team and their coach, Thai officials said.

A witness on the scene said they saw one person being carried on a stretcher from the cave into the ambulance around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Reuters reported.

A video published by the Thai PBS news channel on Monday also showed a person on a stretcher — likely the fifth boy — being transferred to a helicopter.

Another video from Thai PBS showed an ambulance arriving at a hospital in Chiang Rai city, near the cave network.

The rescue operation is estimated to take ten hours, and end by 9 p.m.

Four members of the Wild Boar soccer team were rescued on Sunday, and are recovering from their ordeal in hospital. Rescuers took out the weakest boys first.

Eight other boys, aged between 11 and 16, and their 25-year-old coach remained stranded as of Monday morning.

The four rescued boys on Sunday had to travel about 2.5 miles with oxygen tanks, and make their way back to the cave's entrance using a 3 mile rope. They were accompanied by two divers throughout.

About 0.6 miles of the journey was underwater, where everyone had to wear full face masks.

The rescued boys are currently being kept in sterilized isolation units at a nearby hospital, which prohibits physical contact, and their parents have not been told that they're safe.

None of the boys' identities have not yet been publicly revealed.

Although it rained on Sunday, it did not affect the water levels in the cave, said Narongsak Osatanakorn, the leader of the command center in charge of the rescue operation.

Thailand's monsoon season began over the weekend, and the region expects days of rainfall and thunderstorms throughout July and August.

The soccer team had been trapped in the underground cave network since June 23. They were stranded by flash floods that caused water levels to rise, making it difficult to get out.

Rescuers found them huddled on top of a dry rock about 2.5 miles from the cave's entrance after nine days of searching.
