Running a successful business actually seems, well, relatively easy once you realize what kind of person and leader you have to be in order to maintain a reliable team and overcome unforeseen obstacles.

Here are the four important qualities of a great business owner:

1. They Understand Their Attitude Is Contagious

Nearly every business owner is aware that their attitude has a direct impact on their team but they still walk into the office with a grimace or, even worse, no expression at all. Maybe they’re too stressed out to be excited. Maybe they’re afraid that being overconfident will bring bad luck. No one should be expected to spread positive energy 24/7 but employees cannot perform to the best of their ability if they are afraid of their boss. Instead, they’ll sprint out of the office the moment the clock strikes 5:00 p.m. and refrain from asking crucial questions for fear of “bothering” their bosses. You must be able to put your business and employees first.

When a boss is visibly excited about the immediate future, his or her employees will be thinking “This is only the beginning,” when their company reaches a goal.

2. Employees Can Also Be Friends

This only applies to employees who have earned their boss’s trust. Once a great leader has established that a new employee is cooperative and responsible, the employee will, from then on, be viewed as a friend. Skeptics might propose that the new employee would then abuse the relationship, particularly in regards to delegating tasks. But friends don’t “delegate tasks.” They ask for favors. So, when a trusted friend asks a favor, like, “Can you stay a little late today?” the employee will most likely oblige because that’s what friends do. They help each other out. Of course, this is still an employer/employee relationship but it doesn’t need to be so rigid. And, with the right ones, creating a bigger relationship like a friendship can go a long way.
