2 dead 24 injured in mass Las Vegas shooting

Two people have died and 24 are injured after at least one gunman opened fire at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, US, on Sunday night.

The shooter fired on multiple people around the casino-hotel, one of the major landmarks on the city's central strip, where a crowd of hundreds had gathered for a country music festival.

Police confirmed that they have incapacitated one suspect around an hour after the shooting began, but appeared to still be hunting for more.

Footage posted online showed the moment the sound of gunfire, from what sounds like an automatic weapon, broke out at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival, which was taking place just outside the main Mandalay Bay building.

Witnesses, cited by the Associated Press, said the gunfire was coming from above, and that flashes which looked like guns being fired could be seen from the windows of the 43-floor hotel high above them.

Photographs showing the concert area after most people had fled, which Business Insider is not republishing, showed at least one apparent victim covered in blood on the ground.

A hospital statement, cited by the Reuters news agency, confirmed two deaths and 24 injuries from apparent gunshot wounds.

Twitter users citing local police scanners said as many as two gunmen were later active inside the hotel, on the 32nd floor, according to the Reuters news agency. It is not clear whether they were responsible for the gunfire outside.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it was "investigating reports of an active shooter" and told the public to stay away.

Part of the I-15 freeway, which runs parallel to Las Vegas Boulevard, also known as the Las Vegas Strip, has been closed.
